About the war
The Nigerian-Biafran Civil War officially began on July 6, 1967 and ended with Biafra’s surrender on Jan. 15, 1970.
Although the data is insufficient, it is estimated that between 500,000 and 6 million Igbos lost their lives.

About Umu Biafra
The narrative surrounding the war often neglects the regular people whose lives were uprooted and relegated to collateral damage. Umu Biafra seeks to immortalize their stories so that we may never forget the kinsmen who endured and survived a genocidal campaign.
In sharing stories from the mouths of those who lived through it, we hope to confront the gruesome truth of what really happened while also educating people.

“There is that great proverb — that until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”
